BBQ Time

It’s nearly BBQ time. That means family and friends get together and enjoy each other’s company.
However – if someone is struggling with an alcohol issue this “Fun Time” can be one of the worst times.
The person feels like they need to join in and have a drink. “Just One Won’t Hurt” say friends and family.
Unfortunately, “Just One Drink” to an alcohol dependent person is enough to set them back on the path of compulsive and often, secretive drinking. As an alcoholic myself – now 23 years sober from my last
drink – I had to understand that if I have that first drink, then there will be a second and more drinks to follow.
Once started, I continue drinking, and it gets progressively worse.

The only way for an alcoholic to recover from a drinking problem is not to have the first drink! This is
very hard for the person – and the family – to hear and to understand – that’s what I try to help the person with. When I work with a client then I reflect what is going on for them and help them come to terms with the facts – only then can the client start to make a change.

Like all addictive processes, the only answer to an Alcohol Addiction is complete abstinence. There is no
compromise with an addiction!!

This is not just true of people with Alcohol problems – all addictions are the same.
Alcohol, Drugs, Gambling, Food, Sex, Pornography, Relationship and Co-dependency are all the same.
For people with an Addictive Personality, we all have the problem. No matter what the drug of choice
is.

It’s Euro Football Time – Surely “one drink” is ok?

The UK and Europe are watching football. It’s an exciting time for those football fans and supporters.
They love the game and all those BBQ’s and family gatherings with friend’s are a must. No one wants to
be left out.

For those with a drink problem, it’s a bad time. Imagine the person struggling with alcohol – wanting to
mix with family and friends at that BBQ – friends or family being a little intoxicated and then the problem
– “Surely one drink won’t hurt you”!!

The fact is – if you are an alcoholic and are choosing to live in sobriety – that first drink will start the
addictive cycle of again. For an alcoholic “One is too many and a thousand never enough”. Once someone
with a drink problem has that first drink – there will be a second and a third and then it’s like the old
times. That person goes back to old drinking ways faster than you can imagine. This is so hard for
friends and family to understand – they probably don’t have a drink problem – they don’t understand that
one drink will equal chaos to the alcoholic.

This is not just true of people with alcohol problems – all addictions are the same.

Alcohol Addiction Treatment Surrey

Of all addictions, alcohol addiction is one of the toughest. Since we live in a world where social drinking is common, it’s also quite hard to detect. Often when people abuse alcohol, they don’t realise they have a problem.

Alcohol is just as deadly as drugs. In fact, technically it is a drug, but because its ubiquity this is easy to overlook. If invented in the modern age, it would probably be considered a Class A drug.

Signs you or a family member/friend have a problem include: feeling guilty or ashamed after drinking; lying to hide drinking habits; having people worried about your drinking habits; needing to drink to feel relaxed or better; forgetting what you did while drinking; and regularly drinking more than intended.
